The origins of Rugby Football are shrouded in mystery with one of the most popular stories being that a troublesome pupil, William Webb Ellis, at Rugby School in 1823, violated school rules by picking up the ball and running with it. However, modern research has found this event to be mere myth. It is clear, however, that the game developed within the public schools and universities of Victorian England, and was the preserve of the privileged classes.
