Advantage Surrendered?
Since the euphoria of the announcement that Widnes Vikings would be elevated to Super League from the 2012 season, it does appear that both enthusiasm and optimism has waned as far as some supporters are concerned.
I would class myself in that category, but why the change?
Primarily I would have to say it is down to lack of activity on the signings front. OK, recent results haven’t done much to build on confidence but that is an aside to what we should be looking forward to in seasons to come.
I can appreciate that clubs are only “officially” allowed to approach players and announce them as signed come September, particularly where the players current club has a vested interest in retaining their services for the forthcoming season. However, there are players, of suitable quality who have been told by their current clubs that they will not, for whatever reason, be retained next season. Surely these players are there to be approached, signed and announced?
Perhaps I’m being naive in thinking it works like that, but look at today’s announcement that Keith Senior will be plying his trade at Crusaders for the next 2 seasons. While I’m not advocating Widnes should have signed him (We should be looking to younger players than 35yr olds), there must be players in a similar position who are available to be signed and announced?
The club (looking to push forward in it’s drive for 7,000 Vikings Stronghold members) I feel, need to provide something for supporters who are wavering about joining the scheme to grab onto and take forward into the season.
Who knows, maybe we should all have a little more faith and we might have secured deals for numerous stars, it’s just the seeming inactivity that is making us jittery and impatient.
Come on Widnes, announce something big! And soon! Please.
